St. Cloud group reaches goal of 100,000 donated diapers in 24 days

Operation Baby New Year can put its diaper raising goal behind it – at least for this year.

The group launched a December campaign to collect 100,000 donated diapers in the St. Cloud area by Jan. 3.

And they made it. In fact, they overflowed their diaper goal by bringing in more than 104,000 in just 24 days, according to the Operation Baby New Year Facebook page.

Many St. Cloud-area businesses helped the effort by agreeing to be drop-off locations for those donating diapers.

The campaign's organizer, Justin Michael, tells the St. Cloud Times the five non-profit groups receiving the diapers should be able to keep their clients covered for months with the donations, which are estimated to be worth $18,000.

Michael says the expense of keeping one baby in diapers for a month is roughly $70 to $80.

A sequel in the works

The end of this diaper campaign may be only a beginning.

The group says in its Facebook post it's already looking ahead to "Operation Baby New Year: Double Trouble" with an eye toward collecting 200,000 diapers next year.

They're planning on giving Double Trouble a larger reach – extending beyond the immediate St. Cloud area into rural communities and working with sister cities organizing diaper drives around the country.
