St. Louis County Board chair announces U.S. Senate candidacy

A St. Louis County commissioner officially announced that he will challenge DFL U.S. Sen. Al Franken.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that Chris Dahlberg, 51, announced that he wants to be the Republican who faces the incumbent senator in November of 2014. He made the announcement in New Brighton on the front porch of supporters, promoting what he calls a return to “front-porch leadership.” He plans a similar event at his Duluth home on Saturday.

Dahlberg served one term on the Duluth City Council and last year won a second term as St. Louis County commissioner. Both the City Council and County Board positions are nonpartisan meaning there’s no party declaration and no party identification next to a candidate’s name on the ballot.

The Associated Press reported that Dahlberg says his experience as a Republican in a strongly Democratic part of the state would make him a good candidate to challenge Franken.

Other Republican candidates include state Sen. Julianne Ortman, state Rep. Jim Abeler and businessman Mike McFadden.
