The number of people arrested for drunken driving this St. Patrick's Day was the lowest it has been in the past six years, the Department of Public Safety announced Wednesday.

Leading up to St. Patrick's Day, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety announced it would be stepping up its DWI enforcement around the state.

The efforts led to 94 drivers being arrested for drunken driving on Tuesday, according to preliminary numbers.

Department of Public Safety officials said the numbers are encouraging, but "one DWI is too many."

The weekend before St. Patrick's Day, when many people celebrated, officials made 326 DWI arrests, compared to the previous weekend when 320 people were arrested for drunken driving.

Last year, 495 drivers were arrested for DWI over the holiday weekend, and 106 arrests on the actual holiday, the DPS said.

In 2013, when St. Patrick's Day was on a Sunday, 226 people were arrested for drunken driving on the holiday, down from 346 in 2012 when the holiday fell on a Saturday.

St. Patrick's Day 2011 saw 289 DWI arrests, and there were 225 in 2010, the DPS says.
