St. Paul bar to offer '1941 prices' on meals to mark 75th anniversary

A St. Paul bar will celebrate its 75th anniversary later this month – and is marking it by offering food specials at 1941 prices.

O'Gara's Bar & Grill on Snelling Ave. N. will take diners back to where it all began starting on March 11, commemorating the year founder Jim O'Gara opened its doors.

The family-owned bar announced that just in time for St. Patrick's Day, it will roll back prices to 1941 on its daily specials, not only to celebrate its birthday but also to "thank the thousands of loyal employees and millions of faithful customers" who have supported the business.

This will see fish and chips on sale for $1.95 on Friday, March 11, a burger basket for $1.50 on March 12 and 15, corned beef and cabbage for $2.25 on March 13, and steak for $1.95 on the 14th.

There are drink specials as well, with Jameson's available for a bargain 75 cents on March 13 and 14.

The bar will be hosting a series of anniversary events between March 11-19, including a St. Patrick's Day parade and live music.

After being opened in 1941 by Jim O'Gara, it was taken over by his son Tim in 1972, who expanded it by adding The Shamrock Room in 1982 and O'Gara's Garage, now The Shanty, in 1985.

Tim O'Gara then passed it on to his son Dan and his wife Kris in 2003, with Dan O'Gara saying on the website the bar has remained successful "by continuing with tradition and establishing relationships within the neighborhood, neighboring businesses, the Selby at Snelling Business Association and Union Park District Council."

1941 prices?

While undoubtedly a bargain by modern standards, we dare say O'Gara's isn't rolling back prices to exactly what they were in 1941.

That's because $1.95 in 1941 for fish and chips would be the equivalent of $31.43 in today's money, according to this U.S. Inflation Calculator.

The regular menu price for fish and chips at O'Gara's is $13, so to give the true 1941 price it would have to charge 81 cents.'s $1.95 for a full meal, so we're sure patrons won't be complaining.
