St. Paul cops take kids on a holiday shopping spree

St. Paul police officers spent Saturday morning helping hundreds of kids pick out presents at Target, according to the police department's Twitter.

Shop with Cops started in St. Paul 15 years ago as a way to "foster positive relationships between youth and officers," according to its website. The officers raise money and take underprivileged children – kindergarten through sixth grade – out shopping for holiday gifts.

Shop with Cops says it helped 50 kids its first year, and that number continues to grow. Saturday, FOX 9 reports, the police department served about 240 children.

This year, $18,000 was raised and divided among the children, who then got to pick out presents for their families, the station says.

The Shop with Cops website says police also ate lunch with the children and helped them wrap their gifts.
