A 21-year-old man is in a critical condition in Regions Hospital after being shot in the chest in what police say was an "accidental" incident.

The shooting happened at an apartment complex at 321 E. Larpenteur Ave., and was reported to police just after midnight.

When officers got to the scene, they found 21-year-old Saldana Irving suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was taken to the hospital in a critical condition, and after several hours of investigation, police arrested a 20-year-old Maplewood man on suspicion of reckless discharge of a firearm.

He has since been released from jail without charges, though police continue to investigate the shooting.

"Preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was an accident and that there is no threat to public safety," said Maplewood police.
