Just a couple of days after asking the public's assistance finding a man they say "violently attacked" and robbed a 76-year-old who'd tried to help him, St. Paul police are now reporting they have a suspect in custody.

An update from the department's Facebook says "we believe we've got the guy" who the victim said was someone he thought was just "down on his luck" when he gave him a ride on Thursday.

According to WCCO, that's when the suspect is believed to have approached the 76-year-old man after having stolen a soda from a Super America convenience store.

After the victim agreed to help and give him a ride, authorities report, the suspect tricked the man out of his vehicle, threw him to the ground and stole his jacket.

According to the Pioneer Press, the suspect is believed to have done this by complaining that he couldn't get the passenger door to open up; when the driver went around to help him out of the vehicle, he was knocked down.

The man suffered a broken arm as well as a broken leg.

The department thanked the public for calling in with tips and helping with the investigation, adding "it's wonderful to partner with community members who care so much about their city!"
