A St. Paul police officer has died, just over a week after suffering a medical problem on duty, the Pioneer Press reports.

Officer Josh Lynaugh, 30, died early Saturday at Regions Hospital, St. Paul police spokesman Howie Padilla said.

Padilla would no elaborate on the medical problem Lynaugh suffered on Feb. 8, except to say it had not been the result of an assault.

Josh Lynaugh was the son of retired St. Paul police Sgt. Tim Lynaugh. The elder Lynaugh had pinned his badge on his son during his 2007 graduation.

Josh Lynaugh had twice received the St. Paul Police Department's Life Saving Award and had 16 commendations, and letters of commendation or appreciation in his personnel file, the Pioneer Press reports.

According to the paper, the St. Paul police union considers Lynaugh's death as occurring in the line of duty.

Mayor Chris Coleman called Lynaugh "a hell of a cop" at a news conference Saturday night. Funeral arrangements for the officer are pending.
