Police in St. Paul say a man armed with a rifle was killed when he exchanged gunfire with officers Monday.

A police spokesman says SWAT team negotiators were called to a home on White Bear Avenue after officers saw a man with a rifle and bulletproof vest enter the house, the Pioneer Press reports.

The man then emerged from the house and began shooting and was killed when officers returned fire, the newspaper says.

The shooting occurred in the alley behind the home not far from Interstate 94, which was shut down for a time, WCCO reports. The station says a 911 call about a man with a rifle came in at 3:20 p.m. and the Interstate was open again by 5 p.m.

Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Paulos (pictured at top) said no officers were injured in the shootout. Police did not identify the man who was killed but described him as an adult white male.
