The Pioneer Press has the story of St. Paul marathoner Bill Langevin, who was a witness to the killing of Maplewood police Sgt. Joseph Bergeron in 2010 – and this week became a witness to yet more killing at the Boston Marathon.

Three years ago, Langevin, 61, had been running on St. Paul's Bruce Vento Trail when he saw two men approach Bergeron's squad car and he witnessed an execution-style shooting by 21-year-old Jason John Jones. Jones was shot and killed by police later that day. A second man, Joshua Michael Martin, 21, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years, the Pioneer Press notes.

Langevin, a retired St. Paul firefighter, had run to help Bergeron and called for help with the officer's radio.

In Boston on Monday, Langevin was about a quarter-mile from the finish line when two bombs went off, killing three and injuring more than 170, the Pioneer Press reported.

"As I'm turning the corner, we hear two loud explosions -- initially thought it was canon fire," Langevin told FOX 9. "There [were] people all over the area just crying -- civilians crying, runners crying."

He was forced off the course, unable to finish the race. He has completed more than 25 Boston Marathons, and he vows to be there next year.

"Tomorrow, I'll be sending in my deposit for a hotel next year," he told the Pioneer Press. "This won't deter me. I'm not going to be intimidated by the cowards who did this."
