St. Paul's Como Conservatory preps for overnight same-sex marriages

MinnPost has the story of Paul Nolle and Reid Bordson, who will be the first same-sex couple to legally wed on Aug. 1 in St. Paul. The two consider themselves a low-key pair, but they are embracing the opportunity to be a small part of history, MinnPost reports.

Minnesota lawmakers earlier this year legalized same-sex marriage in the state, and Gov. Mark Dayton signed the bill into law, which takes effect Aug. 1.

Much has been made of Minneapolis' plan to hold a marathon session of back-to-back wedding ceremonies at City Hall, to be officiated by Mayor R.T. Rybak. The city on Monday offered free tickets to those who want to attend just to be a part of history, WCCO reported.

MinnPost also had a story last week about Andy Holmaas, the 26-year-old Rybak aide who has become an "accidental wedding planner."

But St. Paul is also planning a marriages marathon all-nighter, at the historic conservatory, which will host 90-minute ceremonies through the evening, MinnPost reports.

The Mall of America also plans a wedding at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 1.

A number of gay and lesbian Minnesota couples are in wedding countdown mode as Thursday approaches, the Star Tribune reports.
