Stalker tracking system makes test run in Ramsey County

Ramsey County begins a pilot project Thursday that will track offenders and notify victims of stalking when a predator is nearby.

According to the Star Tribune, the GPS tracking device called Stalker Alert requires offenders to where ankle bracelet and victims to carry a small receiver. If the alleged predator enters a five mile radius of the victim, an instant notification would be sent to police and victims by text or audible tone.

The device maker tells the newspaper that offenders are less likely to offend if they know they're being monitored.

Ramsey County Attorney John Choi says the program is voluntary and offenders would have to agree to the program as a condition of bail.

The Associated Press reports the most dangerous offenders are not eligible for the program.
