A standoff in North Mankato that lasted several hours ended with a shooting and the death of an 83-year-old homeowner, the Star Tribune reports.

Police say officers were called the home at 1610 Lor Ray Drive around 10 a.m. Thursday for a welfare check considered to be "high risk" because firearms were present.

For more than four hours, officers tried to make contact with the person inside the home, but were unsuccessful. A tactical team was called in and entered the home just after 2 p.m.

According to the Star Tribune, the owner of the property, Hodgson Tschohl, 83, opened fire from inside house, and after came out armed with two handguns and fired again. He was then shot dead by police.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident. The Ramsey County medical examiner's office said Tschohl died of multiple gunshot
