The Star Tribune has endorsed Betsy Hodges in the 35 candidate Minneapolis mayoral race.

The report from the Tribune says that Hodges' experience on the Minneapolis City Council along with her record of responsible fiscal leadership and her willingness to take on special interests on behalf of taxpayers as reasons for giving Hodges the endorsement.

The Star Tribune's Editorial Board argued in its recent "Growing Minneapolis" series, the next mayor and City Council should reject the status quo approach.

Hodges, 44, grew up in Minnetonka. She earned her bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She earned a master's degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison before returning to Minnesota in the late 1990s.

Hodges was elected to her first four-year term on the Minneapolis City Council in 2005. The Tribune says her most notable accomplishment was reform of the pension funds for retired police and firefighters. The paper says her reforms saved city taxpayers $20 million in potential property tax increases.
