Star Tribune to take over printing of Pioneer Press

The Minneapolis Star Tribune is getting ready to take over the printing duties of its rival newspaper in St. Paul, WCCO reports.

Star Tribune Media Co. announced Wednesday details of a five-year deal with Pioneer Press owner Digital First Media to print the St. Paul paper in Minneapolis.

The concept of printing other newspapers isn't new to Star Tribune Media. The company said for years it has been providing printing and distribution services to such publications as the New York Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal.

Star Tribune publisher and CEO Mike Klingensmith said in a press release that in addition to expanding their printing business, the move helps preserve "more journalistic voices in our market, a principle that we fully support."

Meanwhile, Pioneer Press publisher Guy Gilmore says his paper "will continue to deliver the relevant news and advertising information our customers demand."

News of the printing deal comes two days after the Denver Post reported that Digital First Media, which is also their parent company, was implementing an all-access subscription model across all but one of its 75 daily newspapers.

The Post says the Pioneer Press this week will become the first Digital First Media property to make the transition into the new business model. The model includes subscription costs for different levels of online access to the company's papers.
