More than 1.8M attend State Fair, setting overall record

Minnesota's State Fair is known as the Great Minnesota Get-Together – and boy, Minnesotans got together this year.

A record 1,824,830 people attended the fair, making this year's State Fair the best-attended in history. This is the first time attendance has topped 1.8 million – the previous overall record was 1,790,497 set in 2009, according to the State Fair's website.

Not only did the fair set an overall record, but two one-day attendance records were broken this year. Tuesday’s attendance of 133,595 broke the record for day 6 of the fair and Saturday's attendance of 252,092 people was the biggest crowd ever on a single day in State Fair history.

Officials determine the daily attendance by weighing most tickets in a "weigh room" and then use the weight to calculate the number of admissions into the fair, the Star Tribune reports.

“We don’t weigh all the tickets, because we’re now scanning tickets at the West End gate, which generates an electronic number that we add into the weighed number.” State Fair spokeswoman Brienna Schuette told the newspaper.

Visitors under age 5 aren't included in attendance numbers because they're admitted for free.

The mild, albeit sometimes rainy, weather, along with the new West End Transit Hub, West End Market and History and Heritage Center likely contributed to a higher number of visitors, KSTP reports. There were also 28 new foods and several new rides, among other attractions, drawing people to the fair.
