State Fair officials unveil $15 million plan for West End Market

Minnesota State Fair officials presented a $15 million plan Wednesday that will tear down a nearly 50-year-old landmark to make room for a larger marketplace and transit hub on the western edge of the fairgrounds.

The Associated Press reports the area replacing Heritage Square will be called West End Market. The project includes a new space for exhibitors and food vendors, an updated State Fair history center, a larger amphitheater and a drop-off and pick-up center.

The name was chosen from 1,300 entries submitted through Facebook and email earlier this month.

First named the Young America Center, Heritage Square was initially intended to last no more than 10 years when it was built in 1964.

Now, fair officials say the old-fashioned section of the fairgrounds is losing its appeal. The upgrade was proposed to attract more fairgoers to West Dan Patch Avenue.

The Pioneer Press said the area's iconic North St. Paul train depot, train tracks, windmill and old cabin won't be removed.

West End Market is expected to be open in time for the 2014 fair.
