State, federal officials brief Minn. counties on disaster aid

Local leaders from 18 Minnesota counties affected by June storms will hear from state officials and FEMA representatives this week regarding federal disaster aid.

President Barack Obama signed a disaster relief declaration last month to approve federal aid after more than $17.8 million in damages to public property was documented.

The Associated Press reports briefings will be held for local government, school and nonprofit entities on how to apply for assistance. This does not apply to individual residents.

Eligible recipients can request federal aid up to 75 percent of the cost to repair damages, the St. Cloud Times said.

To free up federal dollars, state and local governments are responsible for matching costs by 25 percent.

It was reported last week that Gov. Mark Dayton was in talks with legislative leaders about a special session to authorize the state's share of disaster funding, which could amount to about $4.5 million, but no timetable has been established.
