State GOP senators ask Ritchie to suspend online voter registration

State Republican lawmakers met with Secretary of State Mark Ritchie over the state's controversial online voter registration system, the Associated Press reported.

Senate Minority Leader David Hann, Sen. Scott Newman and Rep. Tim Sanders requested that Ritchie take down the website until lawmakers can take up the issue. The Associated Press said Ritchie rejected the idea.

It's unclear when the meeting took place.

The senators are questioning whether Ritchie had the authority to implement the system without the Legislature's OK, and they're not alone. Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton, along with DFL state Senator and Chair of the Senate Elections Committee Kate Sieben, also sided against Ritchie.

So far, at least 1,400 people have registered or updated an existing registration through the recently-launched site.

Ritchie maintains his office was given the authority to create the online system from a law passed in 2000 and said this week that he's prepared to go to court over the dispute.
