State native christens USS Minnesota
The nuclear attack submarine USS Minnesota has officially been christened, The Associated Press reported.
Ellen Roughead, a Minnesota native and wife of former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, was on hand in Newport News, Va., Saturday to break a bottle of champagne on the sub's hull.
Also in attendance at the christening were Minnesota U.S. Reps. Chip Cravaack and Betty McCollum.
The USS Minnesota has been under construction since 2008 and is 88 percent complete.
According to the Department of Defense, the USS Minnesota is the third U.S. vessel to bear the state's name.
More than 1,000 shipbuilders worked on the $2 billion sub.
