State Patrol: Alcohol involved in deadly crash in NW MN
Alcohol is believed to have played a role in a fatal crash in northwest Minnesota late Saturday night.
The Minnesota State Patrol reports that the two-vehicle crash happened around 11:25 p.m. on Hwy. 1 in Clover Leaf Township, located in Pennington County east of Thief River Falls.
The driver of a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on Country Road 22 when it failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of 250th Ave. and Hwy. 1. When the Cherokee went through the intersection it collided with a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse.
The contact forced the Traverse, which was occupied by a 31-year-old woman and a 9-year-old boy, into the north ditch. Both suffered minor injuries and were transported to a hospital in Thief River Falls for treatment.
Driving the Cherokee was 58-year-old Gary I. Austed, of Lake Bronson, Minnesota. Austed died at the scene.
The State Patrol notes that Austed was not wearing a seat belt and alcohol was detected on him.
