A fourth Republican has joined the race for governor in Minnesota. State Sen. David Thompson of Lakeville announced Wednesday morning that he was throwing his hat in the ring.

He called for lower taxes, less government regulation and more educational opportunities, the Pioneer Press reports.

The lawyer and former radio talk show host was first elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2010. He last year tried unsuccessfully to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot to make Minnesota a right to work state, MPR notes.

The other contenders: Former Minnesota House Speaker Kurt Zellers, businessman Scott Honour and Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson have also announced they're running for governor.

The Republicans face DFL Gov. Mark Dayton. A poll last month indicated Dayton has an edge for now over potential opponents.

In an editorial, the Pioneer Press welcomes a strong field of GOP candidates to the race, and urges Minnesotans to make jobs and the state business climate the center of the campaign debate.
