One of the swimming areas at Quarry Park and Nature Reserve

Stearns County has closed its popular swimming quarries in Waite Park.

Because the pools at Quarry Park have limited space for social distancing, the swimming areas will be closed beginning May 21 until further notice, the county announced Wednesday.

The rest of the Quarry Park and Nature Reserve will remain open.

The park draws around 150,000 visitors annually, and are particularly busy from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the county says.

“On a nice summer day, it is not uncommon to see 300 plus people around each of the swimming quarries,” a statement reads.

The county has deemed Warner Lake County Park to have enough space for social distancing to stay open. As usual, there will be no lifeguards.

“It is extremely important that beach users practice and maintain social distancing. We will monitor the situation and will re-evaluate if the area becomes unsafe,” the county said.
