Stewart Mills will NOT run again in the 8th District, despite Rick Nolan's retirement

He took the decision after consulting hard data.

He was out, then he was maybe back in, now he's out again.

Stewart Mills III has decided against a third attempt at winning Minnesota's 8th Congressional District, despite the pending retirement of Democratic incumbent Rep. Rick Nolan.

Mills was just over 2,000 votes away from winning the U.S. House seat in the 2016 elections, but is rejecting the chance to fight for it again after consulting the "hard data."

He initially said he wouldn't run in November, criticizing the national GOP for recruiting weak candidates and for not having an "explainable path to victory" in the 2018 mid-terms.

– Minnesota now has 4 "toss-up" races for the U.S. House race.

But in the wake of Nolan's surprise retirement announcement, Mills says he received a "barrage" of messages from supporters urging him to run, which caused him to reconsider.

In his Facebook announcement on Tuesday, Mills wrote:

"I promised to seriously reconsider the 2018 election cycle and make a decision based off of “hard data.” I finished my review of that data and completed other due diligence last night and have decided not to run. I owed it to my supporters to take this consideration very seriously, many of those supporters got behind me all the way back in 2013."

It means both parties will be looking for new candidates to run in the notoriously tight 8th District, which in previous elections has been among the biggest spending House races.

Even though pollsters are predicting a wave of Democratic victories come November – given what we've already seen in special elections around the country – the 8th District is a real opportunity for Republicans to flip red.

It's considered one of four "toss-up" races in Minnesota, according to the Cook Political Report.
