Struggling restaurant chain Granite City is seemingly being saved from bankruptcy by the parent company of Famous Dave's.

Granite City, based in Bloomington, filed for bankruptcy protection in December, putting at risk the future of its 25 locations across 13 states.

But on Friday it was announced that BBQ Holdings, the Minnetonka-based parent company of Famous Dave's, has agreed a deal to buy Granite City.

"This meaningfully accretive acquisition of Granite City Food and Brewery aligns with our strategy to accelerate growth and expansion as a multi-brand restaurant company," said Jeff Crivello, Chief Executive Officer of BBQ Holdings, in a press release.

"As an award-winning concept, Granite City is a fantastic addition to the BBQ Holdings family, and we look forward to the synergies we can create between multiple brands."

"Granite City ... is known for their brunch, patios, and of course locally brewed craft beer. Granite City fits in well with our operating philosophy of great food and great service."

Granite City has five restaurants in Minnesota, Granite City locations in St. Cloud, Maple Grove, Roseville and Eagan, and the Cadillac Ranch at the Mall of America.

Famous Dave's meanwhile has 13 locations in Minnesota, most of them in the Twin Cities.

It comes amid a change of strategy from Famous Dave's, which is experimenting more with smaller, more "bar-centric" locations with a focus on delivery and catering.

It opened the first of these locations in Uptown, Minneapolis last fall, shortly after exiting its restaurant in Calhoun Square.
