A student from Minnesota has died in Mississippi after being struck by a tire that flew off a tractor-trailer.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that an 18-wheeler lost two wheels on Interstate 10 near Gautier, which bounced across the road and into a rest stop.

At the rest stop at the time was 21-year-old Margaret Maurer, who was struck by one of the tires and killed.

The newspaper notes that Maurer is from Forest Lake, Minnesota, and was studying ecology and evolutionary biology at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Maurer was with two friends at the time, and they were about to get back into their car after stopping for a bathroom break when she was hit by the tire.

Maurer was a senior at Tulane, and one of the university's Class of 2019 Newcomb Scholars. She had studied abroad in Ecuador in spring 2018.
