Thousands of students across the U.S. are preparing to stage two walkouts over the next two months, calling for action on guns following the Florida massacre.

The first, organized nationally by Women's March Youth EMPOWER, will see students, teachers, parents and administrators walk out for 17 minutes at 10 a.m.

Already several dozen schools across the country have signed up for the demonstration – among them Bemidji High School in Minnesota.

More are expected to sign up as the walkout draws closer.

The Florida shooting left 17 people – most of them students – dead at the hands of a 19 year old former student armed with an AR-15 assault rifle.

The horrific has prompted renewed calls for a ban on assault-type weapons, with an AR-15 used in a number of recent mass shootings, including the Las Vegas massacre in October.

Organizers say the walkout will "protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods."

"We need action," it adds. "Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship."

"Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school.

"Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day."

The March 14 walkout will be followed by another just over a month later, when the National School Walkout group calls on students to leave their classrooms at 10 a.m. on Friday, Apr. 20.

That is the 19th anniversary of the Columbine shootings.
