Study: Minnesota still has the best drivers in the U.S.

Would you believe it?

Minnesotans aren't just known to be nice. We're also recognized as excellent drivers. That's according to a study by a car insurance comparison website.

CarInsuranceComparison.com put Minnesota at the very bottom of its list of worst drivers by state, meaning Minnesota's drivers are the best.

The website also ranked Minnesotans as the safest drivers in 2015 and 2014. So this is starting to be a trend.

CarInsuranceComparison.com used information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding fatal car crashes in each state and what caused them. That data was used to rank each state.

The data says careless driving – like texting or messing around on a phone – is the best predictor of how safe states' drivers are. And Minnesota ranked top of the list for lowest rate of careless driving fatalities.

Minnesota came in with the third lowest fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.

As far as wearing seat belts and obeying traffic signals, Minnesota came in at the 10th best. We're the 15th best the U.S. for low drunk driving deaths.

Speeding is a bit of a problem for Minnesotans, though. We were the 23rd worst in the country for fatal speed-related crashes.

Best and worst drivers

The top five states with the best drivers are Minnesota, Vermont, Virginia, Iowa and Rhode Island.

As far as the state with the worst drivers, there's a tie between Louisiana and Texas. Apparently drivers in Louisiana don't like to obey traffic laws, and there are a lot of drunk driving fatalities in Texas.

The next worse are South Carolina, North Dakota and Delaware.

So far this year, 340 people have been killed on Minnesota roads. That's slightly less than this time last year. In 2015, the Department of Public Safety said 411 people were killed in traffic incidents.
