An apparently suicidal man wielding a knife was shot dead by police officers in Stillwater in the early hours of Wednesday.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office says officers from Stillwater, Bayport and Oak Park Heights responded to a call involving a suicidal man at 1 a.m.
Arriving at the scene on the 1200 block of 4th Street South, officers were met by a man who was armed with a knife.
During the ensuing encounter, one officer fired their weapon, while another discharged their Taser.
The man was taken to Lakeview Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The sheriff's office says that police body-cams and squad car dash-cams were operating during the incident.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure while the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension carries out its investigation.
There have been a few high-profile instances in Minnesota this year in which police have shot dead someone who was reportedly suicidal.
It happened earlier this month in Minneapolis, when 36-year-old Travis Jordan was shot dead by police, who arrived at the scene to find him wielding a large kitchen knife.
Jordan's death has since prompted calls for changes in the way police respond to people going through a mental health crisis.
