Summit Brewing accelerates $6M expansion project

Summit Brewing Co., Minnesota's largest craft brewer, plans to break ground Friday on a $6 million addition of its St. Paul brewery, the Business Journal reports. Construction was slated to start next June. “We’ve hit the wall on capacity. We had to cut 12 brews this year due to capacity issues, so the original expansion date of June 2013 has been moved to this month," CEO and founder Mark Stutrud said in a news release.

Summit to open taproom at St. Paul Brewery

Summit Brewing Company tells Minnesota Public Radio it will open its on-site taproom by late September. At first, it will only be open to the public on Fridays from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. Summit Brewing Marketing Coordinator Carey Matthews said, "This is definitely something we're excited about, to bring more people in to experience our beer where it was made."

Valspar announces $30M expansion project, plans to create 135 jobs

The Valspar Corp., a maker of paints and industrial coatings, plans to spend $30 million to expand its research and development campus at its former headquarters building in downtown Minneapolis, the Pioneer Press reports. The project is expected to create up to 135 new full-time jobs over the next two-years. It will also add 87,000-square-feet of laboratory, meeting and office space. The expansion is scheduled to be finished by early 2014.

New Twin Cities brewery to battle aquatic invaders

Minnetonka-based Tonka Beer Company launched its first beer this spring and plans to donate 100 percent of the profits to help prevent the spread of invasive species in Minnesota waterways. KSTP reports "Big Island Shandy" is sold at more than 100 stores throughout the state. The goal is to donate at least $10,000 this year and twice that amount next year. A second beer is set to hit store shelves in August.
