Off and on rain continues across Minnesota. And Wednesday evening the rain could take the form of severe storms.

In fact, the National Weather Service says the possibility of severe storms continues through Thursday, particularly in southern Minnesota.

With several inches of new rain possible through Thursday, the Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for southeastern Minnesota and northern Iowa. The watch includes Mower and Fillmore counties.

Forecasters say the sun's appearance Wednesday morning actually increased the chances that the ensuing storms would be severe. KARE-11 says the sunshine created an unstable atmosphere ripe for storm development.

By early afternoon storms were headed toward southern Minnesota. The Star Tribune has a collection of the special weather statements organized by county. They warn that hail and damaging winds could accompany the dounpours of rain.
