Surly offers first glimpse of plans for Minneapolis brewery

Surly, the fast-growing craft brewer, has released architectural drawings of its proposed "destination brewery" in Minneapolis after much anticipation.

At first blush, the drawings look like a kind of groovy cafeteria where beer is served. That's not to say there isn't some sort austere aesthetic rendered. All of these are courtesy HGA Architects.

The Brooklyn Center-based Surly purchased the site just more than two months ago, but plans for the brewery have been knocking around for at least two years, ever since the brewer pushed for a state law change at the Capitol that eventually became known as the "Surly bill."

And the site is in Minneapolis -- despite creeping up on the border to St. Paul -- in Prospect Park, near Malcolm Avenue and 5th Street SE. The Star Tribune says the 8.3-acre, $20 million beer joint will be a bar, a brewery and an event center.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press says the brewery will be able to 100,000 barrels a year, and will also include a restaurant and a beer garden.

Plans currently call for environmental site cleanup to begin this fall, says the PiPress, construction to begin late in 2013, and the project to be completed by the end of 2014.
