Surly Brewing has applied for a $500,000 loan from Hennepin County to support its new $20 million destination brewery project near the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium in southeast Minneapolis, Finance & Commerce reports.

The Brooklyn Center-based craft beer maker has already received nearly $2 million from the state, the county and the Metropolitan Council to cleanup the former site of a food processing plant.

Surly wants to build a 60,000-square-foot brewpub featuring a bar, restaurant, event center, beer garden, and rooftop terrace.

Patricia Fitzgerald, principal planning analyst for Hennepin County's Transit Oriented Development, told Twin Cities Business that 11 projects applied for loans and grants totaling $3.6 million.

The Hennepin County Housing and Redevelopment Authority is expected to determine which projects to fund within the next couple of months.

In 2011, Surly successfully helped lobby for a bill to legalize so-called brewery taprooms.
