Surprise! Crews find time capsule under historic statue

Crews moving a historic statue of the Mayo brothers from its home outside the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester got a surprise.

When crews lifted up the bronze statue, they found a wooden box underneath (see photo above), ABC 6 says.

It's believed to be a time capsule, but there's no word on how old the box is, what's inside, or when it will be opened, the news station notes.

Crews moved the statue into storage Wednesday while the Mayo Civic Center undergoes an $85 million expansion, the civic center's Facebook page says. It will be restored and then returned to a public location sometime in the next few years, reports note.

"There are a lot of cracks around the feet, cracks in the bronze and between the two brothers. We'll grind those out and re-weld. Then we'll remove all of the corrosion and oxidation," Kristin Cheronis, sculpture and objects conservator, told KTTC.

The statue depicts Dr. William Mayo and Dr. Charles Mayo, who are credited with starting the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, standing side-by-side in their surgical gowns. It was completed in 1952 and installed in the park that now borders the Mayo Civic Center, the Rochester Post Bulletin says, before being moved to the entrance of the Civic Center.

As for the time capsule, Civic Center officials told ABC 6 it will be kept with the company that's restoring the statue, and they are unsure when it will be opened.
