Surveillance video confirms theft of service dog

A service dog that helps its owner cope with seizures was apparently stolen in St. Paul.

The Pioneer Press reports that the owner of the Shih-poo named Gummy Bear had tied the dog up outside the SuperAmerica station on Lexington Parkway on Sunday evening.

Surveillance video recorded at the station showed an older, silver car pull up next to the dog while the owner was inside. The video shows a man getting out, taking the dog off the leash and putting it in the backseat, according to Sgt. Paul Paulos, a police spokesman. The owner went in the station, came out about 10 minutes later and the dog was gone. Gummy Bear was wearing the service animal's traditional green vest at the time of the incident.

Dog thefts aren't uncommon, but this one stood out because it was a service dog and because police had surveillance video to use in pursuit of the thief.

Earlier this year, a man who stole a $2,500 Chihuahua puppy from a Shakopee pet store was captured on surveillance video. As police followed up their search for the dog, they executed a search warrant at a home in Northfield and uncovered a marijuana growing operation.

Last month, a man was caught on surveillance video stealing three puppies from a Denver pet store. A woman who was captured on surveillance video as she scooped up a puppy at a suburban Chicago Petland apparently later dropped the pooch off at a Petland store in Missouri.
