A sheriff's deputy is dead in western Wisconsin after being shot while responding to reports of a broken down vehicle.

The Rusk County Sheriff's Department said the incident happened around 10:55 p.m. Saturday on Broken Arrow Road, just south of Ladysmith, when 33-year-old deputy Dan Glaze responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle.

Glaze found the vehicle in a field and radioed back reporting this, but dispatch lost contact with him. When backup arrived a few minutes later, they found he'd been shot dead.

A manhunt was launched, with police looking for a 43-year-old armed man. He surrendered to police on Sunday morning, the Barron County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

The suspect fired a single shot at officers before giving himself up. He is now in jail awaiting formal charges.

"The Rusk County Sheriff’s Department wishes to thank everyone, especially all the local law enforcement that assisted them during this tragedy," Rusk County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook.

According to WEAU, Glaze was a 7-year veteran in law enforcement, and had been with the department for the past 18 months.

The Officer Down Memorial Page lists 275 Wisconsin police officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
