Suspect breaks into MN mosque, causes $5,000 in damage

The Umatul Islam Center, a Minneapolis mosque, was broken into and vandalized Wednesday night – an incident that has some Muslims concerned.

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) says the Muslim community is worried about what might have motivated the incident.

People who work at the mosque told CAIR that surveillance video caught a white male, who appears to be in his 50s, breaking doors and windows. He also stole equipment and files. The council says damages are more than $5,000.

This is the second time this month someone has targeted a mosque, according to the council. A man – who CAIR says resembles the most recent suspect – was caught on surveillance video trying to break into the mosque, but he did not succeed.

State reviewing all vanity license plates

This comes just days after a photo of a Minneapolis license plate that reads "FMUSLIMS" was posted online, drawing criticism from community members and elected officials.

The Department of Public Safety said it was an "error" that allowed the plate to be approved, calling it "offensive and distasteful.”

The state revoked the plates and is getting them off the road.

FOX 9 reports the state is now reviewing all vanity license plates to check for additional issues.
