New Richmond police identified the victims as Courtney Bradford and her daughter, Jasmine Bradford.
Their bodies were discovered when authorities responded to a report of smoke at their residence on Hallewood Boulevard, New Richmond Police said.
Police Chief Mark Samelstad tells the New Richmond News investigators are headed to El Paso, Texas, to interview a suspect who was arrested there Thursday.
Police say Christian Daniel "Danny" Nunez-Ortega, 37, is currently charged with fraud and operating a vehicle without the owner's consent, though Samelstad says police are investigating the deaths of the Bradfords as a homicide case, KSTP reports.
Police believe Courtney Bradford had previously been in a relationship with Nunez-Ortega, the station says.
FOX 9 reports police believe Nunez-Ortega drove Bradford's car to Des Moines, Iowa, – where it was recovered – and from there boarded a plane to Texas.
"This is absolutely a bad day," New Richmond Mayor Fred Horne said Thursday morning, according to the New Richmond News.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call St. Croix County emergency communications at 715-386-4701.
