Publish date:

An investigation is underway after a suspect being taken into custody in Moorhead died shortly after complaining of shortness of breath.

The suspect, who had outstanding felony warrants, was being taken into custody by the High Plains Fugitive Task Force around 1 p.m. Tuesday on the 700 block of 4th St. S. in Moorhead, according to a release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

During the arrest, the suspect complained of shortness of breath and lost consciousness just as paramedics arrived at the scene. The individual, who has not been identified, died Tuesday night at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo.

Circumstances of the death are being investigated by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, with investigators in interviewing officers and participants involved in the incident.

Officers were not wearing body cameras and it's not yet clear if squad vehicle dash cameras recorded the incident.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine a cause of death.

The High Plains Fugitive Task Force is part of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The Moorhead incident happened just over 24 hours before a man in St. Cloud died after being tased by officers who were attempting to arrest him Wednesday afternoon. An investigation into that case is also ongoing.
