Suspect dies by suicide after 11 hour standoff in western Wisconsin motel
A suspect died by suicide after an 11 hour standoff with law enforcement in western Wisconsin Thursday.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, officials from several local departments located a suspect at a motel in Balsam Lake at around 7:23 p.m. The suspect was reportedly armed and had barricaded himself in a motel room.
A lockdown ensued for around 11 hours before the suspect cut off communication with officers. At that point, officers entered the room and found the suspect hiding in an attic space.
Officers reportedly attempted to take the suspect into custody, but he died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Lifesaving measures were attempted but unsuccessful.
The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident. The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
