A suspect was found dead after a 4-and-a-half hour standoff with police near Mille Lacs Lake on Saturday.

Officers were called to a house in the city of Wahkon around 10:36 p.m. Saturday on a report of someone violating a domestic assault no-contact order.

Just after midnight, their investigation took them to another house, at 635 Hennepin Ave. S. in nearby Isle, where they made contact with the suspect.

During this interaction, a Mille Lacs County deputy was fired upon from inside the house. The deputy returned fire and took cover.

After the shots were fired, several more police agencies turned up at the scene, with a negotiator then speaking with the suspect.
