Suspect in Amber Alert charged with assaulting child's mother

The case is under investigation, and more charges could be added.

The man who was arrested following an Amber Alert in Minneapolis earlier this week has been charged with assaulting the child's mother.

Hersley Hulbert, 26, was charged Thursday with second-degree and first-degree assault, and is expected to make his first court appearance in the afternoon, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman says.

According to the criminal complaint, Hulbert went to the victim's home on Tuesday, accusing her of cheating on him. The victim says he punched her multiple times and stabbed her in the leg.

The victim told police Hulbert took their 2 1/2-year-old son, charges say, which led to the Amber Alert. Hulbert and the child were found soon after, Minneapolis police said Tuesday.

Because the child was there when the victim was assaulted, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office is filing a Blakely motion, which means they'll ask for a longer sentence if Hulbert is found guilty, the news release says.

The attorney's office notes the relationship between Hulbert and the child is still under investigation, noting additional charges could be added. At the time of the Amber Alert, police called Hulbert the child's non-custodial parent.
