Suspect shoots at St. Paul officers, with one returning fire
St. Paul Police Department says a suspect fired a shot at officers on Monday evening, with one officer returning fire.
The incident unfolded on the 900 block of Algonquin Avenue, to which police were. called shortly before 6 p.m. on a report of a man "digging in the trunk of a vehicle."
As St. Paul PD tells it: "While officers were investigating, they were unable to positively identify the suspect, so they attempted to detain him. He resisted and a scuffle ensued, during which all three people fell to the ground.
"At some point, the suspect was able to break free, run, pull a gun and shoot at the officers. At least one officer returned fire."
The suspect was able to escape despite officers giving chase, and other officers arriving to search the area.
Police say they're investigating whether the same suspect is connected to an armed carjacking that was reported shortly after at the intersection of Stillwater Avenue East and Hazel Street North.
Nobody was seriously injured in the incident, though one officer did suffer a dislocated finger during the scuffle.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident, as is customary when an officer fires their weapon. Both officers are on standard administrative leave.
