Update: Officials identify suspect who shot at mail carrier and sheriff's deputy

It's not clear if officers fired their weapons.

The Grand Forks County Medical Examiner has identified the suspect in a shooting that happened Monday in Polk County.

According to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, it's 73-year-old Clarence Duane Huderle of Warren.

He died of a gunshot wound, but his exact manner of death is under investigation.

The officer involved is a member of the Pine to Prairie Drug Task Force, but he is not being named because he works undercover.

The original story from earlier Tuesday is below.

A suspect who police say shot at a mail carrier and a sheriff's deputy was found dead.

A Polk County Sheriff's Deputy was called to Northland Township, Minnesota, Monday around 11:21 a.m. after a mail carrier reported someone had fired two gunshots, shattering the rear window of the vehicle, a news release says.

At the scene, the deputy confronted a man armed with a rifle. The deputy called for backup, the release says, and other agencies from nearly 100 miles away came to assist, WDAZ reports.

The sheriff's office says at one point the man fired his gun, hitting the deputy's vehicle.

The situation came to an end around 2 p.m., WDAZ notes, when the man was found dead outside his home with a high-powered rifle, the news release says. Officials say it's not clear at this time if the deputy returned fire during the incident.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
