Suspected drunk driver crashes into tents, campers at MN state park

A suspected drunk driver plowed through several campsites at a Minnesota state park, crashing into campers and driving over tents after an apparent domestic dispute.

The Pine County Sheriff's Office says the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning at a campground in St. Croix State Park.

A man driving a white SUV hurtled through the site, "smashing into campers and driving over tents," before crashing into a tree in the campground area.

The only reason no one was injured was because of the storm that had just passed over the area, as people who would have been in tents had sought shelter in their cars during the storm.

The sheriff's office said the passing storm "saved multiple lives."

It is thought to have started as a domestic incident in one of the park's campsites, with the driver taking their young child with them and driving off.

After crashing into the tree, he took off into the nearby woods, with campers pointing authorities in his direction.

He was later found and arrested for DWI and criminal vehicular operation charges. The child he had taken was found with their mother and was taken to the hospital by family to be checked.
