Another polar weather system is pushing into Minnesota. The system will bring snow, wind and extreme cold to parts of Minnesota through Tuesday.

According to KSTP, 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible from the metro to Willmar, Redwood Falls to Mankato, Albert Lea and Rochester. Generally the majority of the snow fall will take place overnight Saturday into Sunday morning.

Once the snow moves out the wind and the cold will follow closely behind.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for a large portion of Minnesota, extending from extreme northwest Minnesota through central, southwest and south central portions of the state.

The weather service says northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts upwards of 55 mph will cause significant blowing and drifting snow, which will reduce visibility and potentially create white out situations in much of outlying parts of the state.

According to the weather service, the worst conditions will likely be from noon until 9 p.m. on Sunday.

FOX 9 reports winds are expected to diminish on Monday, but frigid air and subzero temperatures are expected to hang around through Wednesday. Wind chill values of 40 to 50 below zero are expected Monday and through the first half of the day on Tuesday.

The Pioneer Press reports the cold temperatures will be comparable to the polar vortex that gripped Minnesota Jan. 6-7, air temperatures of 20 to 25 below are expected.

The National Weather Service says life threatening cold is expected between Sunday night through Tuesday.

That has school leaders deciding what to do on Monday. Metro school leaders told the Pioneer Press Friday they consider closing school when the air temperatures drop to minus 20 and wind chills make even a brief time outside dangerous.

Some schools have already announced their closure for Monday, others expect to decide by Sunday evening.
