Update: A second Minnesota city will also see its Target close early next year. Read our updated story with the latest info here.

The city of Fergus Falls is rallying to save its local Target, which is set to close this February.

Fergus Falls learned of the closure on Monday afternoon, with the Fergus Falls Daily Journal reporting Mayor Ben Schierer as saying: "This is devastating news for the community."

The mayor said he'd found out like most other city residents, by word of mouth, with Target confirming the store will close on Feb. 3.

Declining profitability over several years has been cited by Target as the reason for the closure. It's one of three stores confirmed on Monday to be closing this coming February.

Within hours of the news spreading, a petition had been set up to save the store.

As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the petition set up by Melinda Christianson had been signed by almost 6,500 people, close to the 7,000 signature target set by Change.org.

"Target has been an important part of our community for almost twenty years," she writes. "Closing Target in Fergus Falls would take the jobs of hard workers, and it would remove the positive impact the store has had on our community.

"Instead of a great shopping destination, we would be left with another empty retail building."

KVRR reports that 90 people are employed at the store at 2300 College Way.

Fergus Falls also has a Walmart Supercenter, located on the west side of I-94 not far from the Target.

Fergus Falls' response to the impending closure echoes that of another Minnesota city, Austin, which launched a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful campaign to save its local Target in late 2014.
