The first Target store opened in Roseville on May 1, 1962. Fifty years later, the Minneapolis-based discount retailer has nearly 1,800 stores. Walmart, Kmart and Kohl's are also celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

With Walmart stores opening in Burnsville, in St. Cloud and in Redwood Falls this coming week, Minnesota for the first time will have more Walmart outlets (including Sam's Clubs) than it does Target stores.

Target, Kohl's announce holiday hiring plans

Minneapolis-based Target plans to hire 80,000 to 90,000 temporary employees nationwide for the Christmas shopping season, Fox Business reports. That is slightly fewer than last year, but Target notes 30 percent of the seasonal workers it hired last year stayed with the retailer permanently. Meanwhile, Wisconsin-based Kohl's plans to boost its temporary workforce by more than 10 percent from last year.
