Target Corp. has created a new technology and innovation office in San Francisco to track down firms that can help improve its e-commerce initiatives, Reuters reports.

The Minneapolis-based discount giant has hired David Newman, an executive who spent six years at the online business of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., to run its Technology Innovation Center. The new office will focus speeding up the retailer's website and adding more digital shopping experiences into its physical stores through smartphones.

"Retail is undergoing a major revolution, and technology is key," Beth Jacob, executive vice president and chief information officer for Target Technology Services, said last week during a media event at the new office, the Oakland Tribune reported. "You have to be able to operate at warp speed, and innovate very quickly."

Target has hired nearly 20 developers, designers, data scientists and marketing experts for the new office.

Earlier this month, Target launched a new digital retailing collaboration with Facebook, dubbed Cartwheel. The beta version invites shoppers to earn in-store savings by sharing Target deals with their friends.
