Target hiring 20 percent fewer temporary workers for holidays

Fewer workers will be hired by Target Corp. for the upcoming holiday season, The Associated Press reports.

The Minneapolis-based retailer says it will be hiring 70,000 seasonal workers this year, down from 88,000 -- or 20 percent -- from last year.

The retailer says it wants to be more efficient in its hiring practices.

Target's executive vice president of human resources, Jodee Kozlak, tells The AP that the company is "getting smarter in terms of anticipating how many resources we need when guests are really going to be shopping the hardest."

In addition, Kozlak says, more permanent Target workers are seeking more hours.

The AP said the nation's retailers are bracing for a tough holiday shopping period after a slower back-to-school season.

The company didn't mention in its announcement whether the move had anything to do with holiday sales numbers.

Target's 2012 holiday sales fell 1.6 percent in comparison with the same period in 2011, Yahoo Finance reports.

Target announced earlier this month that it would be implementing same-day in-store pick-up for purchases made online in time for Black Friday, which kicks off the holiday shopping season.

That is slightly fewer than last year, but Target notes 30 percent of the seasonal workers it hired last year stayed with the retailer permanently. Meanwhile, Wisconsin-based Kohl's plans to boost its temporary workforce by more than 10 percent from last year.
